“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:21
Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:21 challenge us to examine our deepest affections. Our treasure—what we value most—determines the direction of our hearts. If we prioritize wealth, comfort, or approval, our hearts will be consumed by fleeting pursuits. But if God is our greatest treasure, our hearts will be anchored in Him.
Psalm 119:10 expresses a similar longing:
“I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands.”
The psalmist understands that without a heart wholly set on God, we are prone to wander. True treasure is found not in earthly gain but in a life surrendered to God’s will.
C.S. Lewis, in The Weight of Glory, writes:
“If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak.”
Lewis reminds us that we often settle for lesser joys when eternal delight in God is offered to us. Rather than clinging to perishable things, we are invited to store up treasure in heaven—where joy, peace, and security are everlasting.
What we treasure reveals where our heart truly belongs. May we seek God with all our hearts, placing our greatest affection in Him.
Prayer
Lord, search my heart and reveal where I have placed my treasure. Help me to seek You above all else, that my heart may be fully devoted to You. Keep me from straying and teach me to find my joy in You alone. Amen.
