Getting Ready by Staying Awake

Living alert to God’s presence

As we conclude our Advent series Getting Ready, Jesus calls His disciples to a posture of steady alertness. In Luke 12, watchfulness is not a sudden burst of spiritual intensity or anxious prediction about the future. It is a way of living—day by day, moment by moment—attentive to the Master’s presence. As Eugene Peterson reminds us, “Faith is not a sudden leap; it is a steady walk, day after day.” Advent trains us for this kind of faith: a quiet readiness that shapes ordinary life.

Jesus’ picture of staying awake looks very much like faithful attention in unseen hours. A nurse working the night shift serves while most of the world sleeps. There are no crowds, no praise, and little recognition. Yet attentiveness matters deeply—missing a small change in a patient’s condition can be life-altering. Staying awake is not excitement; it is faithfulness. In the same way, Luke 12’s servants remain ready through the long night, entrusted with responsibilities that matter even when no one seems to be watching. Staying awake, Jesus teaches, is less about dramatic moments and more about faithful attention in the ordinary hours.

The great surprise of Jesus’ teaching is not fear, but grace. The Master returns and, astonishingly, serves His servants (Luke 12:37). This is the heart of the gospel: the One we watch for is also the One who gives Himself for us. Staying awake means remaining open to grace—ready to receive Christ again and again. As we wait for Christmas, we keep our lamps burning and our hearts attentive, trusting that the Lord who once came in humility will come again in glory.

Prayer

Lord Jesus,

Teach us to walk faithfully with You, day after day. Clear our lives of distractions and keep us awake to Your presence. As we wait this Advent, help us to serve with joy and to live ready for Your return.

Ten Days Later

Waiting in Fellowship with the Guide

Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 42

“Ten days later the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah …‘Do not be afraid… for I am with you and will save you and deliver you from his hands. I will show you compassion.’”

Jeremiah 42:7, 11–12

When the remnant of Judah came to Jeremiah, they asked for divine direction: “Pray that the LORD your God will tell us where we should go and what we should do.” Yet they had already decided to flee to Egypt. They did not seek guidance; they sought confirmation. Jeremiah prayed — and waited. For ten days, there was silence. Only after that patient silence did God speak: “Do not be afraid… for I am with you.” But by then, the people’s impatience and fear had already hardened their hearts. They trusted their own plans more than the God who had promised compassion and deliverance. As a result, they ignored God’s warning, fled to Egypt, and met the very disaster—sword, famine, and exile—that He had sought to save them from.

E. Stanley Jones, the Methodist missionary to India, learned a similar lesson in his early ministry. Zealous and sincere, he tried to fit God’s will into his own ambitions. Later he wrote, “If you do not seek the will of God first, you will seek to bend it later.” In time, he discovered that true guidance comes not from impulse or cleverness but from staying close to the Guide Himself. “When I turned my will over to Christ,” he said, “I found that His will was not a straitjacket — it was wings.”

We, too, often move ahead, asking God to bless choices already made. Yet guidance is born not in haste but in holy waiting. As John Stott observed, “We must allow the Word of God to confront us, to disturb our security.” And C.S. Lewis reminds us, “There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, ‘All right, then, have it your way.’”

When we wait in fellowship with the Guide, even silence becomes sacred. God’s timing teaches trust; His pauses prepare our hearts for obedience.

Prayer

Lord, teach us to seek Your will before making decisions. Deliver us from rushing ahead or bending Your plan to fit our desires. Give us patience to wait through the “ten days” of silence until Your word comes clear. Keep us in fellowship with You, our true Guide. Lead us in Your compassion, and help us to walk in obedience and peace.

Faithful Readiness

Jesus’ words call us to an alert and devoted life—a posture of readiness not rooted in fear, but in love and faithfulness. As servants waiting for the Master’s return, we are called to live in such a way that we could meet Him at any moment, with nothing to hide and everything surrendered. Lent sharpens our attention to both: the eternal and the immediate.

William Barclay reminds us that this readiness is “not a passive waiting, but an active service.” For Barclay, true faith is expressed in action—a daily life of love, obedience, and care for others. To be ready, then, is not merely to believe, but to be constantly doing the work of the kingdom: forgiving, encouraging, and serving.

Alexander Maclaren writes, “The watchful servant is the blessed servant.” He emphasizes that Jesus’ words are not only a warning but a promise. The astounding grace of the passage is that when the Master returns and finds His servants ready, “he will gird himself and serve them” (v. 37). Maclaren calls this “a picture of the unimaginable condescension and love of Christ.”

Yet Jesus also speaks of judgment for those who forget the Master’s return and live selfishly. “To whom much is given, much will be required” (v. 48). Our calling is great—but so is the grace that sustains it.

Lent invites us to renew our posture of readiness—not from pressure, but from love. How can you serve Christ today, faithfully and quietly, with your lamp burning?

Lord, awaken my heart. Teach me to live with holy expectation. Make me a faithful servant, active in love, ready in hope, and grounded in Your grace. Amen.
