Obedience in Action
Scripture: Matthew 21:28–32
Which of the two did the will of his father?
Matthew 21:31
What matters more to God—what we say or what we do? Jesus tells a parable about two sons whose father asks them to work in his vineyard. The first refuses but later changes his mind and goes. The second politely agrees but never goes. Jesus tells this story to religious leaders who claimed to obey God but refused to repent. Meanwhile, those whom society regarded as sinners and outcasts listened to John the Baptist, repented, and turned toward God. Jesus reminds us that true faith is shown not merely through our words but through our actions: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments” (John 14:15).
Neither son was perfect. The father wanted more than polite promises; he wanted willing obedience followed by faithful action. In the same way, God wants more than outward signs of religion. The first son’s change of heart shows us that it is never too late to repent and obey. The second son’s empty promise warns us against saying the right things without doing them. As the psalmist declares, “I delight to do Your will, O my God” (Psalm 40:8), reminding us that true obedience comes from a heart that willingly and joyfully follows Him.
Every day, God gives us opportunities to be faithful and obedient by loving, forgiving, and serving others. We may promise to follow Him, yet hesitate when He calls us to act. Jesus asks, “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46). Being faithful and obedient means having a humble heart, being willing to repent, and putting our faith into action. God Himself gives us both the desire and the strength to do His will (Philippians 2:13). May we be faithful in our commitment and obedient in our actions, allowing our daily lives to reflect our love for Him.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Forgive us when our actions do not match our words. Give us humble hearts that are willing to repent and joyful spirits that delight in doing Your will. Help us show our faith through loving and faithful obedience.
Amen.
