Hands That Serve

Scripture Reading: John 13:1–11

After that, Jesus poured water into a basin and

began to wash his disciples’ feet,

drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

John 13:5

On the night before his crucifixion, Jesus performed an extraordinary act of humility. Knowing that the Father had placed all things under his authority, he rose from the table, wrapped a towel around his waist, and washed his disciples’ feet—a task ordinarily reserved for a servant. Though he was their Lord and Master, Jesus willingly took the lowest place, revealing that true greatness is found not in power, position, or privilege, but in humble service. In God’s kingdom, those who seek to be first must be willing to become servants of all. Jesus himself declared, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (Mark 10:43). His humility was not a denial of his greatness, but its fullest expression. The One who held all things in his hands used those very hands to serve others.

Peter, bewildered by his Master’s humility, protested. Jesus replied, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me” (John 13:8). Before Peter could learn to serve like Christ, he had to receive Christ’s cleansing grace. Charles Spurgeon reminds us that the Savior who washed his disciples’ feet continues to minister to us through his patient forgiveness and restoring mercy (1 John 1:9). We do not serve to earn God’s grace; we serve because we have first received it.

Jesus then instructed his disciples, “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you” (John 13:15). We often seek extraordinary opportunities to serve God while overlooking the ordinary responsibilities before us. True servanthood begins with humble obedience wherever love calls us to meet another’s needs. The hands that washed the disciples’ feet would soon be stretched upon the cross. Both reveal the same self-giving love. Having received his grace, we are called to become hands that serve.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Free us from pride and selfish ambition. Open our eyes to the needs around us, and make our hands willing instruments of your compassion and love.

Amen.
