The Bread of Life

Read: John 6:24–35

Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. 

Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, 

and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’

John 6:35 

Crowds followed Jesus after He miraculously fed the five thousand. They crossed the lake looking for Him, hoping for another meal. But Jesus knew they were seeking more than bread—they were seeking what He could give rather than who He was. Gently He challenged them: “Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life” (John 6:27). It is possible to approach God in the same way, turning to Him only for help, comfort, or material blessings. While God graciously provides for our needs, His greatest gift is not what He gives but Himself. The deepest hunger of every human heart can never be satisfied by success, possessions, or even religious activity. It is satisfied only in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

When the people asked, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” they expected a list of religious duties. Instead, Jesus pointed them to the foundation of faith: “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent” (John 6:29). The Christian life begins not with our efforts but with trusting Christ. From that faith grows a life of obedience and discipleship. Jesus then made one of the most comforting promises in Scripture: “I am the bread of life.” Just as bread must be eaten daily to sustain physical life, we need Christ every day to nourish our souls. Yesterday’s spiritual experiences cannot sustain today’s walk with God. Through His Word, prayer, worship, and daily fellowship, Jesus strengthens us to face each new day with hope and faith.

Establishing the right priorities means seeking Christ before seeking His gifts. When He becomes our greatest treasure, everything else finds its proper place. His presence satisfies our deepest longings, His truth guides our decisions, and His grace sustains us through every season of life. As we come to Him day by day, we discover that the Bread of Life is always enough. The One who fed the hungry crowd still invites us to Himself, promising a satisfaction that nothing in this world can ever provide.

Heavenly Father,

Feed our souls with Your Word, strengthen our faith, and teach us to abide in You each day. May You always be our greatest treasure, our highest priority, and our deepest satisfaction.
