Three Marks of Faith

We remember before our God and Father 

your work produced by faith,

your labor prompted by love, 

and your endurance inspired by hope 

in our Lord Jesus Christ.

What do people remember about us after we leave the room? Our achievements, our position, or the way we treated them? When Paul remembered the Thessalonian believers, he spoke of three qualities: their work produced by faith, labor prompted by love, and endurance inspired by hope (1 Thessalonians 1:3). Yet beneath these qualities was something even more important: they were “loved by God” (v. 4). Their service did not earn His love; His love inspired their service. Charles Spurgeon encouraged those troubled by questions about God’s choosing to look directly to Jesus and trust His promise: “Whoever comes to me I will never drive away” (John 6:37). Our confidence rests not in what we accomplish, but in the Savior who receives us. As Scripture reminds us, “We love because he first loved us” (1 John 4:19).

God’s love transformed the Thessalonians. Their faith moved them to work, their love inspired them to serve, and their hope in Christ gave them strength to endure suffering. Though they welcomed the gospel amid severe trials, they did so with joy given by the Holy Spirit. Soon, “the Lord’s message rang out” from them throughout the surrounding regions (1 Thessalonians 1:6–8). Their witness was not confined to what they said; it was visible in how they lived. Jesus told His disciples, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). Good stewardship is more than managing possessions or fulfilling responsibilities. It is allowing the grace we have received to become a blessing to others.

These three marks of faith become visible in the ordinary moments of our lives. Our work of faith may be a responsibility carried out faithfully; our labor of love, a kindness that costs us time or effort; and our endurance of hope, continuing to trust God when the future is uncertain. We do not need a large platform to make Christ known. God has already placed people within our reach—in our homes, workplaces, churches, and neighborhoods. We do not serve to earn God’s love; we serve because He has already loved us. May our faith move us to action, our love inspire us to serve, and our hope give us strength to persevere, so that the good news of Christ continues to ring out through our lives.

Heavenly Father, 

Thank You for loving us before we could offer You anything. Strengthen our faith, deepen our love, and sustain our hope. Help us serve with grateful hearts, so that others may come to know Jesus through our words and actions.
