Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 1:1–14
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid,
but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
2 Timothy 1:7
Writing from prison and facing the prospect of death, the apostle Paul encourages his young coworker Timothy to remain faithful to God’s calling. Timothy appears to have struggled with timidity and the pressures of ministry, yet Paul reminds him of the sincere faith nurtured by his grandmother Lois and mother Eunice (2 Timothy 1:5). He urges Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God” (verse 6), assuring him that God’s Spirit provides the power, love, and self-discipline necessary for faithful service. Power enables us to face difficulties with courage and endurance; love directs that strength toward compassion and selfless service; and self-discipline helps us exercise wisdom, restraint, and steadfastness in following Christ.
Paul understood human weakness, having experienced suffering, opposition, and hardship throughout his ministry. Yet he could confidently declare, “I know whom I have believed” (2 Timothy 1:12). His assurance rested not in favorable circumstances or personal abilities but in the faithfulness of Christ. As God reminded Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Henri Nouwen, in The Wounded Healer, emphasizes that our vulnerabilities need not disqualify us from serving others; rather, they can become opportunities through which God’s compassion and healing grace are expressed.
Paul then urges Timothy to guard the precious gospel entrusted to him, not through human strength alone but “with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us” (2 Timothy 1:14). This treasure is the good news of God’s saving grace revealed through Jesus Christ, who has destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light (verse 10). Guarding this treasure means remaining faithful to its truth while sharing it through courageous witness and loving service. True humanity is revealed not through self-sufficiency but through dependence upon God’s Spirit, who transforms our weaknesses into opportunities for faithful service. We need not be fearless in ourselves, for the Spirit who calls us also equips us.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Strengthen us through your Spirit with power, love, and self-discipline. Help us remain faithful to the gospel entrusted to us and serve others with humility and compassion.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
