Scripture Reading: Romans 8:1–17
For those who are led by the Spirit of God
are the children of God.
Romans 8:14
The apostle Paul begins Romans 8 with one of the most reassuring declarations in Scripture: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). In the preceding chapter, Paul describes the painful struggle of knowing what is right yet failing to do it. Rufus M. Jones, in The Double Search, observes how sin develops patterns of behavior that gradually enslave us, even when we desire to change. C. S. Lewis, in Mere Christianity, goes further, describing sin as rebellion against God—our attempt to live independently, as though we belong to ourselves. Repentance, he explains, means laying down our arms, surrendering our self-will, and returning to God. Yet what we cannot accomplish through our own strength, God makes possible through Jesus Christ.
Through Christ’s death and resurrection, we are freed not only from the condemnation of sin but also from its enslaving power. Paul contrasts living according to the flesh, driven by self-centered desires, with living according to the Spirit, who leads us into life and peace (Romans 8:6). This transformation is not achieved through greater determination alone but through surrender to the Holy Spirit. Richard Foster, in Freedom of Simplicity, encourages believers to release the distractions that compete for our devotion and center their lives on God’s kingdom. As we yield our thoughts, desires, and actions to the Spirit, we begin to reflect the character of Christ.
Paul’s greatest assurance, however, is that we are not merely forgiven sinners but welcomed into God’s family. Through the Spirit of adoption, we can cry, “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:15). We no longer live as slaves to fear but as beloved children, secure in our Father’s love. True humanity is discovered not through independence from God but through dependence upon him. As we surrender our self-will and follow the Spirit’s leading, we experience the freedom, peace, and joy of becoming who God created us to be.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the freedom and new life we receive through Jesus Christ. Free us from sin and self-centeredness, renew our hearts through your Spirit, and teach us to live each day as your beloved children.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
