Palm Sunday

The Road to Glory and Surrender

Scripture: Luke 19:28–40; Zechariah 9:9; Psalm 118:25–26

Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” — Luke 19:38

Palm Sunday begins with a quiet miracle. Jesus tells two disciples where to find a young colt—one that has never been ridden—and it is there, just as He said. This detail, both mysterious and prophetic, reveals Jesus’ sovereignty. The King of glory orchestrates even the smallest of things as He moves steadily toward the cross.

The crowd welcomes Him with palm branches and cloaks, shouting, “Hosanna!”—a cry lifted directly from Psalm 118:25: “Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success!” The word “Hosanna” was more than praise—it was a plea. It was the people’s cry for deliverance, a Spirit-empowered prayer: “Save us now!”

For many, this meant rescue from Roman rule and the restoration of the Davidic kingdom in Jerusalem. They saw Jesus as the one who could overthrow Caesar and establish political power. But Jesus had come to save in a deeper way—not from Rome, but from sin; not with a sword, but with a cross.

He rode a colt, not a warhorse. He wept for the city that would reject Him. Still, He entered. Still, He loved.

Palm Sunday asks us: Do we cry Hosanna from a place of surrender or control? Are we willing to follow a King who rides in humility and reigns through sacrifice?

Prayer

Hosanna, Lord—save us. Not as we imagine, but as You know we need. Teach us to lay down our cloaks, our pride, our expectations. Help us welcome You not only with praise but with surrendered hearts. Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Amen.
