Sovereign Over the Storm
“You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them… The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth; you founded the world and all that is in it.”
Psalm 89:9, 11
The psalmist paints a grand and awe-inspiring portrait of God’s sovereignty. He rules over the raging sea—not merely in metaphor, but in reality. In Scripture, the sea often represents chaos, danger, and the unknown. Yet Psalm 89 reminds us that the sea, for all its noise and power, is no match for the voice of God. He stills its waves with authority.
God’s sovereignty is never detached or indifferent. He is the God who parts seas (Psalm 77:19), stills roaring waters (Psalm 65:7), and makes a path through the wilderness (Psalm 107:35). That same sovereign presence is with us today—holding us when we are weak, guiding us when we are lost, and reigning when the world feels unstable.
When life is turbulent and waves crash around us—grief, illness, anxiety, betrayal—it can be hard to feel God’s nearness. Yet Scripture calls us to trust not in feelings, but in truth. As Psalm 89:13 says, “Your arm is endowed with power; your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.” The One who created the world and founded the mountains holds us in His strong hands.
This promise is made flesh in Jesus, who in Mark 4:39 calms a literal storm with a word: “Quiet! Be still!” The disciples were awestruck. The One who stilled the seas of Psalm 89 stood in the boat with them. And He stands with us.
Faith does not require calm waters; it requires a clear focus on the One who reigns above them. Even when we can’t trace His hand, we can trust His heart—a heart that beats with mercy, justice, and unfailing love. Praise in the storm is not denial; it is declaration.
Prayer:
Lord, You are mighty over wind and wave, over time and eternity. When storms rise, fix my heart on Your power and Your peace. Be my anchor when I cannot see the shore. I choose to trust You. Amen.
