“For we are God’s handiwork,
created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ephesians 2:10
I once watched a potter at his wheel. A lump of clay sat formless and fragile, but as the potter’s hands pressed firmly yet gently, it began to rise and take shape. At one point, the vessel wobbled and nearly collapsed. Yet the potter didn’t discard it—he patiently reshaped it until it became a beautiful jar. This is a picture of our life in Christ. Scripture says, “We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand” (Isaiah 64:8). On our own, we are unfinished and broken, but in the hands of the Master Potter we are transformed into His masterpiece. He calls us beloved, not broken; chosen, not forgotten.
The potter doesn’t make vessels to sit unused on a shelf; he designs them for purpose. In the same way, God created us in Christ Jesus for good works. These are not the price of salvation—for salvation is His free gift of grace—but the fruit of it. Each act of kindness, each word of encouragement, each hidden act of obedience is like water poured from the vessel into thirsty lives. As Paul writes, when we yield to the Potter’s hands, we become “instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work” (2 Timothy 2:21).
A jar holds water, a cup refreshes the thirsty, a lamp carries light. Likewise, God has formed us to carry His presence into the world. We are living temples of His Spirit, vessels filled with His grace and love. What dignity this gives our lives—that the Master Potter not only shapes us but also fills us. Our identity is more than forgiven clay; we are His handiwork, created with intention, redeemed with love, and sent with purpose. As we walk in the good works He has prepared, we display His artistry and shine His light.
Prayer
Lord, we thank You that You are the Potter and we are the clay. Shape us by Your hands, smooth out what is rough, and form us into vessels that reflect Your beauty. Fill us with Your Spirit, and help us walk in the good works You have prepared, so our lives may bring glory to You. Amen.
