Christ: The Image and the Center of All Creation
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible… all things have been created through him and for him.”Colossians 1:15–16
Paul lifts the veil on one of the greatest mysteries of faith — the eternal Christ, visible expression of the invisible God. As John Stott writes, “In Jesus of Nazareth, the unseen God has made Himself known in human form.” He is not merely a reflection of God but His exact representation (Hebrews 1:3). William Barclay expands this truth: “In Jesus we see the mind of God, the heart of God, and the will of God perfectly revealed.”
Every longing to know God finds its fulfillment in the face of Jesus Christ. As C. S. Lewis observed, “He is the point at which heaven and earth, God and humanity, become one.” To see Christ is to see reality as it truly is — the Creator entering His creation out of love.
Paul continues, “For in him all things were created.” The universe is not self-existent — it is Christ-originated and Christ-directed. This truth dismantles our illusion of autonomy. Every atom, every heartbeat, every galaxy exists for His glory. Paul Brand saw this reflected even in the human body: “Every cell finds its identity in its connection to the body. Disconnected, it dies.” Likewise, every life detached from Christ loses its purpose and vitality.
If all things were created through Christ and for Christ, then meaning, order, and beauty are found only when our lives revolve around Him. E. Stanley Jones described the Christ-centered life as “a universe where everything fits because Christ is in the center.” When we let Him reign over our hearts, our work, our relationships, even our suffering becomes part of His cosmic harmony. As Paul wrote elsewhere, “From him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever” (Romans 11:36).
In a world that constantly pulls us toward the orbit of self, Colossians calls us back to our true center — Christ, in whom all things hold together. When He is the focus, life finds its balance, beauty, and meaning.
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ,
Image of the invisible God, center of all creation—draw our hearts into Your orbit. Let our lives reflect Your glory, our work serve Your purpose, and our worship join the song of all creation that was made through You and for You.
Amen.
