A Cup Given in Love

“And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple… that person will certainly not lose their reward.”

Matthew 10:42

Jesus measures love for God by how we treat those who can give us nothing in return. A cup of cold water offered to a thirsty child is ordinary, almost forgettable—yet Jesus places eternal weight on it. Why? Because such an act is unselfish. A child cannot repay the favor or enhance our reputation. The kindness stands on its own, motivated not by gain, but by love. In God’s kingdom, this is the truest measure of devotion.

Jesus teaches that God receives our kindness as if it were done directly to Him. What we do—or fail to do—for others matters deeply to God. The unnoticed kindness, the quiet patience, the small mercy extended in private are never invisible to Him. Heaven keeps careful account of love expressed in humble ways. Faithfulness is not proven by how loudly we speak about God, but by how gently we serve those placed before us.

This verse invites us to examine our daily lives. Is there something unselfish you can do today—something small, simple, and sincere? Even if no one else notices, God will. And that is enough. A cup of cold water, given in Jesus’ name, becomes a holy offering.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, shape our hearts to love as You love. Open our eyes to small needs around us, and give us willing hands to serve without seeking reward. May our quiet acts of kindness honor You. Amen.
