The Light That Cannot Be Overcome
Scripture:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:1-5, NIV)
Christ, the Eternal Word
The Word—Jesus Christ—was there at the beginning of time, creating and sustaining all things. This same Word became flesh, entering into our darkness to shine His unquenchable light.
Pause for a moment and think about the grandeur of Christ. Rick Warren reminds us, “Jesus didn’t start in the manger; He is eternal, uncreated, and coexistent with the Father.” The One who was present at the dawn of creation is the same Savior who walks with you today.
Christ, the Light in Darkness
As the evening shadows fall, it’s comforting to remember that Christ’s light shines even in the darkest places. Henri Nouwen writes, “Jesus is the light that pierces the deepest darkness. He does not eliminate the darkness but shines His light in it, giving us hope and direction.”
Think about where you’ve seen His light today—in an act of kindness, a moment of peace, or even the quiet assurance of His presence. His light continues to shine, no matter how dark the world may seem.
Christ, the Life-Giver
In Him is life—abundant, eternal, and full of purpose. Timothy Keller reminds us, “The gospel is not just advice on how to live. It is the power of God’s life entering yours through the light of Christ.”
John Calvin calls Christ the “fountain of life,” reminding us that He is not only the Creator but also the One who sustains us, even in life’s most challenging moments. As you prepare to rest, consider how Christ has sustained and guided you today. His life fills you, offering renewal for tomorrow.
Living in the Light
John Wesley once said, “Let the light of Christ shine through you so that others may see His glory and turn to Him.” Ask yourself: Where did I reflect Christ’s light today? Where can I reflect it more tomorrow?
Evening Prayer
Lord Jesus,
As this day ends, we give thanks for Your light that shines in our darkness. Thank You for sustaining us through Your life and guiding us with Your unquenchable light. As we rest tonight, may Your presence fill our hearts with peace. Prepare us to rise tomorrow, ready to walk in Your light and reflect Your glory.
Amen.
