You Are Mine

God’s Promise of Presence and Deliverance

Scripture:

“But now, this is what the Lord says—He who created you, Jacob, He who formed you, Israel: ‘Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.’” (Isaiah 43:1-3a, NIV)

Do Not Fear, for I Have Redeemed You

In this passage, God speaks directly to His people with words of deep assurance that He is not a distant Creator but One who has formed them with care and redeemed them with love. Henri Nouwen once wrote, To know that you are fully known and fully loved by God is the beginning of freedom from fear.” This truth applies to us today. No matter what trials we face, God’s redemption secures our identity. We are His—loved, chosen, and called by name.

I Will Be With You

Timothy Keller reflects, True faith isn’t about the absence of fear but trusting God in the midst of it.” God’s promise is not that we will avoid difficulties but that He will be with us through them: “When you pass through the waters… when you walk through the fire…”—these are vivid metaphors for life’s trials that threaten to undo us. Yet God promises His presence in the midst of them.

Rick Warren reminds us, “God’s presence is not just a feeling; it is a fact. He is with us even when we don’t feel Him.Whether it’s a personal crisis, a season of uncertainty, or deep sorrow, God’s nearness is our hope and strength.

You Are Mine

Perhaps the most tender assurance in this passage is God’s declaration: “You are mine.” John Calvin reflects on this truth, saying, God’s ownership is not a harsh rule but a loving claim, where He guards us as a shepherd guards his flock. To be claimed by God is to be secure in His love, no matter the storms that rage around us.

Trusting God in Every Season

Isaiah 43:1-3a invites us to trust God’s presence and promises in every season of life. When the waters rise, we can cling to His nearness. When the fire threatens, we can trust that we will not be consumed. God’s Word assures us that no matter what we face, we are His—redeemed, loved, and sustained by His presence.

A Prayer of Trust

Lord, thank You for Your promises of presence and deliverance. In times of trial, help us to trust in Your unfailing love. Remind us that we are Yours—redeemed and called by name. When the waters rise and the fire threatens, may we rest in the assurance that You are with us, guiding us through every storm. In Jesus’ name, amen.
