What God Truly Desires

A Reflection on Micah 6:6-8

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.

And what does the LORD require of you?

To act justly and To love mercy and

To walk humbly with your God.

Micah 6:8

Micah 6:6-8 challenges us to move beyond empty rituals and embrace a life of justice, mercy, and humility before God. The prophet contrasts extravagant religious offerings—burnt offerings, rivers of oil, or even the unthinkable sacrifice of a firstborn—with God’s simple yet profound requirements. As N.T. Wright reminds us, “God is not impressed with outward displays of piety; what He desires is a life that reflects His character.”

To act justly is to live in right relationships with others, seeking fairness and integrity while advocating for the vulnerable. John Stott emphasizes, “Social justice is not optional for the Christian; it is a necessary outworking of the gospel of grace.” Justice reflects God’s heart for the oppressed and calls us to align our actions with His righteousness.

To love mercy means delighting in extending compassion and forgiveness. Michael Card notes, “To love mercy is to live out the overwhelming grace we ourselves have received from God.” Mercy is not transactional but a joyful expression of God’s love flowing through us.

To walk humbly with God is to reject pride and self-reliance, acknowledging our dependence on Him in every step. Donald Coggan writes, “True humility is born from recognizing who we are in light of who God is.” This daily walk shapes our character and aligns us with God’s will.

Micah 6:8 reminds us that what God desires is not grand gestures but lives transformed by His grace, reflecting His justice, mercy, and humility. This is worship that pleases Him and brings His kingdom to earth.

Prayer

Lord, help us to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with You. Transform our hearts to reflect Your character in all we do. Amen.
