Let the Light In

“Your eye is the lamp of your body.

When your eyes are healthy,

your whole body also is full of light.”

 Luke 11:34

Scripture: Luke 11:33–36

Lent is a season of turning — from sin to grace, from shadows to light. In this passage, Jesus speaks not only about the light we shine, but the light we receive. He reminds us that the eye is the lamp of the body — what we fix our gaze on shapes our inner life.

C.S. Lewis wrote, “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” Lewis invites us to understand that Christ is not only the light that reveals truth, but also the light that brings clarity and meaning to all of life.

Dallas Willard challenges us to consider our focus: “We are becoming who we are by what we give our attention to.” If our eyes — our attention and desires — are drawn to the darkness of envy, fear, or pride, that darkness seeps into our souls. But if we turn our eyes toward Christ, the true Light, our whole being becomes radiant.

Jesus warns, “See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness.” In this Lenten journey, we’re invited to examine what we allow to enter through the windows of our soul. Simplicity, stillness, and repentance clear space for the light of Christ to dwell fully in us.

The call of Lent is not only to renounce sin but to renew our vision — to look again at Jesus. Let us turn our eyes upon Jesus, so that His light may fill us, change us, and shine through us.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, Light of the world, cleanse my inner vision. Help me to fix my eyes on You and not be distracted by darkness. Fill my whole being with Your light, that I may walk in Your truth and reflect Your love. Amen.
