Hunting Donkeys, Finding a Kingdom

“The Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you… and you will be changed into a different person.” – 1 Samuel 10:6

Scripture Reading : 1 Samuel 10:1-9

When Israel rejected God’s rule and demanded a human king, God allowed it—not as His perfect will, but as His permissive will. He led the prophet Samuel to a surprising choice: Saul, a young man from the tribe of Benjamin, out searching for his father’s lost donkeys.

Saul came from humble roots. Benjamin was the smallest tribe in Israel—nearly destroyed in the time of the Judges. Yet it also carried special honor. Benjamin was the only son of Jacob born in the Promised Land (Genesis 35:16–18), a child of both sorrow and promise. Saul himself seemed unassuming, even unaware of Samuel’s identity or role as prophet. Yet God chose him.

Though Israel’s motives were flawed, God’s grace was at work. Saul was anointed by Samuel. The Spirit of the Lord came upon him. He was transformed into a new man. God confirmed his calling with clear signs. Though Saul’s reign would later unravel, his beginning was marked by divine presence and potential.

You may feel like your journey is ordinary, but God can use it for extraordinary purposes. Like Saul, you may be “hunting donkeys” when God is leading you toward a kingdom. Trust His calling, not appearances. He sees what we cannot.

Prayer:

Lord, even when I feel small or uncertain, I believe you are at work. Fill me with your Spirit, transform my heart, and lead me into all you have purposed for me.Amen
