A Heart Set Right

The Warning of Simon the Sorcerer

Acts 8:9–25

“You have no part or share in this ministry,

because your heart is not right before God.”

Acts 8:21

Simon the Sorcerer had once captivated the people of Samaria with his magic. They called him “the Great Power of God” (v.10), and he basked in their admiration. But when Philip preached the gospel, Simon believed and was baptized. Outwardly, he joined the church. Inwardly, his heart remained unchanged.

When Simon witnessed the apostles impart the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands, he offered them money—hoping to buy this power for himself (v.19). Peter’s rebuke was sharp and clear: “May your money perish with you… your heart is not right before God.” (vv.20–21). Simon had mistaken spiritual authority for a transaction to control.

Eugene Peterson observed, “Simon had been baptized, but he hadn’t been converted. His outward association with faith hadn’t led to inward transformation. Like many today, he was drawn to the benefits of religion without yielding to its Lord. His story is a cautionary reminder that baptism and church affiliation do not substitute for a surrendered heart.

G. Campbell Morgan insightfully noted, “The peril of Simon was that he thought the gift of God could be made a tool for self-exaltation.” Simon wanted the Holy Spirit’s power, but only to build his own influence. When our spiritual ambitions are driven by ego rather than humility, we risk turning sacred things into self-serving tools.

The good news is this: the Holy Spirit is not only God’s gift to us—He is also God’s work in us. He is constantly realigning our hearts, purifying our desires, and drawing us deeper into truth. When we yield to Him, He transforms ambition into service, and pride into praise.

Prayer:

Lord, search my heart and correct my motives. Let me not seek spiritual gifts for power or prestige, but to glorify You. Thank You for the Spirit, who patiently shapes me into the image of Christ. Form in me a heart that is fully Yours. Amen.
