My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.
Psalm 73:26
Asaph’s journey in Psalm 73 is one many of us can relate to. He begins in turmoil, overwhelmed by the apparent ease and prosperity of the wicked. Doubt creeps in. He nearly stumbles, questioning whether his pursuit of purity and righteousness has been in vain.
But everything changes when he enters the sanctuary of God. There, he gains an eternal perspective. He sees not just the present, but the destiny of the wicked and the security of the righteous. His envy melts away in the light of God’s holiness.
The psalm ends with a remarkable transformation. Asaph’s desires are no longer centered on what others have, but on who God is. “Earth has nothing I desire besides you.” In place of frustration, he finds fulfillment. In place of weakness, he discovers strength—God Himself becomes his portion, his inheritance, and his joy.
This is the invitation to each of us: to shift our gaze from what we lack to who God is. When our bodies falter, our hearts break, or our plans crumble, we can still rest in the unshakable truth that God is our portion forever.
Let Asaph’s words become your own prayer today. May they lead you from despair to delight, from restlessness to refuge—in the One who never fails.
Prayer:
Lord, when I’m tempted to envy or lose heart, turn my eyes to You. Be my strength, my portion, and my deepest desire. Amen.
