A Wellspring of Joy
You have made known to me the path of life;
You will fill me with joy in Your presence,
Psalms 16:11
The third Sunday of Advent is traditionally known as Gaudete Sunday, from the Latin word meaning “Rejoice!” As we move closer to the celebration of Christ’s birth, the focus of Advent gently shifts. We do not leave behind repentance or waiting, but discover that waiting itself is sustained by joy—a deep, steady joy rooted in the presence of God. Life can be hard and challenging, but if we choose joy, we discover that God is already near, steadying us in the waiting. This is not joy postponed until Christmas morning, but joy already given and still unfolding.
Scripture reminds us that true joy has a source beyond circumstance. “In Your presence there is fullness of joy,” declares Psalm 16. The world offers happiness that rises and falls with success or comfort, but Advent joy is different. It is not manufactured by effort or optimism; it is received as we walk the “path of life” God reveals. Isaiah gives voice to this joy when he proclaims, “God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid.” Life does not suddenly become easier, but when we choose joy rooted in trust, fear loosens its grip and hope finds its voice.
The Apostle Paul carries this joy into daily practice. Writing from prison, he issues a surprising command: “Rejoice in the Lord always.” This joy is not denial of anxiety, but a discipline of faith. We choose joy by turning worry into prayer, practicing gratitude, and setting our minds on what is true and life-giving. As we do, “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Life may remain demanding, but choosing joy allows God’s peace to stand watch over us as we wait for Christ.
Prayer for the Week
Heavenly Father,
When life feels heavy and uncertain, teach us to choose joy rooted in Your presence. Help us to trust You, to pray instead of worry, and to receive the peace You freely give. As we wait for Christ, guard our hearts with Your joy and hope. Amen.
