Bible Reading: John 14:15–24
“If you love me, obey my commandments.”
John 14:15
Jesus brings listening and obedience together in one simple yet searching statement: “If you love me, obey my commandments.” Obedience is not a way of earning Christ’s love but the natural response to receiving it. Throughout this farewell conversation, Jesus assures His disciples that they will not be left to obey in their own strength. He promises the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, who will remain with them, teach them, and remind them of all that He has said (John 14:16, 26). Christian obedience begins with God’s gracious work in us before it is expressed through our lives. As Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).
C. S. Lewis reminds us that lasting change always begins in the heart: “I cannot really carry it out till I love my neighbour as myself: and I cannot learn to love my neighbour as myself till I learn to love God: and I cannot learn to love God except by learning to obey Him.” (Mere Christianity). Jesus teaches the same truth. Love for Christ is not measured by our emotions or words alone but by a life that listens and obeys. As we obey Him, our love for God deepens; as our love for God grows, we begin to love others with His compassion and grace. True Christian witness is not produced by outward effort alone but by hearts transformed through loving obedience.
Jesus then gives one of Scripture’s greatest promises: “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them” (John 14:23, NLT). God does not merely give us commands; He gives us Himself. Through the Holy Spirit, Christ lives within us, enabling us to obey and reflecting His love through us. Today, may we listen carefully to the voice of Jesus, trust the Spirit’s leading, and demonstrate our love for Him through joyful obedience. As we do, His life will be seen in ours, and His love will flow through us to a world longing for hope.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Fill our hearts with Your love, so that we may love others as Christ has loved us and bring glory to Your name.
Amen.
