True Worship

Bible Reading: Revelation 19:1-8

“Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power 

belong to our God.”

Our lives are easily pulled in many directions. Responsibilities, ambitions, possessions, worries, and endless distractions can leave our hearts fragmented and spiritually weary. Revelation 19 lifts our eyes to a very different scene. John hears a vast multitude, the twenty-four elders, the four living creatures, and finally all heaven united in four joyful cries of “Hallelujah!” Their praise is not empty celebration but a heartfelt response to God’s holiness, justice, and saving grace. The more they behold God’s character and His victory through the Lamb, the more praise overflows. Gordon MacDonald wisely observes, “To recollect yourself is to recover all your scattered energies.” Worship gathers our scattered hearts and restores them to their true center—God Himself.

Eugene Peterson notes that the four “Hallelujahs” protect God’s people from turning His righteous judgment into human triumphalism. Rather than gloating over evil’s defeat, heaven is drawn into humble adoration before God’s glory. Each “Hallelujah” celebrates another aspect of God’s redeeming work until the final chorus announces the Marriage Supper of the Lamb. Peterson beautifully reminds us that all of human history—and our own personal history—is moving toward this great crescendo of praise, when every discordant note of life will finally blend into the harmony of God’s love. As our gaze remains on Christ, our priorities are transformed. Our work becomes service, our possessions become stewardship, and our relationships become opportunities to reflect His love.

True worship is where right priorities begin. Before we act, plan, or strive, we are called to behold the One who is worthy of all praise. The early church understood that worship was not merely something done in gathered meetings but a way of life that reflected the worship of heaven. They prayed in suffering, sang with joy, and lived in eager expectation of Christ’s return. Every prayer, every hymn, and every act of faithful obedience becomes a foretaste of the day when we will join the heavenly multitude and sing with one voice, “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns.”

Heavenly Father, 

Help us to worship You with our whole lives, seek Your kingdom first, and live each day with hearts centered on the Lamb who is worthy of all praise.
