Seeing Jesus

Bible Reading : John 12:20–36

Sir, we would like to see Jesus.

John 12:21

Among the crowds who came to Jerusalem for Passover were some Greeks who approached Philip with a simple request: “We would like to see Jesus” (John 12:21). Greeks were known in the ancient world not only as travelers but also as seekers of knowledge and truth, often exploring different philosophies and religions. Perhaps these visitors had heard Jesus teach or had witnessed His dramatic cleansing of the temple courts. Whatever awakened their interest, their search eventually brought them to Jesus. They approached Philip, possibly because his Greek name made him seem approachable. Philip consulted Andrew, and Andrew helped bring them to Christ. Throughout John’s Gospel, Andrew repeatedly does this—bringing his brother Peter to Jesus (1:40–42) and later bringing the boy with the loaves and fish (6:8–9). He seems to have understood something important: no sincere seeker was ever an inconvenience to Jesus. Sometimes our greatest ministry is simply helping another person take one step closer to Christ.

Their arrival also marks a significant moment. Earlier Jesus had repeatedly said that His hour had not yet come (John 2:4; 7:30). But when these Gentiles seek Him, Jesus declares, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified” (12:23). He then speaks of a grain of wheat falling into the ground and dying so that it might produce many seeds (v. 24). His glory would be revealed through the cross. Through His death would come a worldwide harvest. “When I am lifted up from the earth,” Jesus says, “I will draw all people to myself” (v. 32). These Greeks become an early glimpse of the gospel reaching beyond Jerusalem to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8), gathering people from every nation and language (Revelation 7:9).

Their request can become our prayer: We would like to see Jesus. And it can shape our witness as well. People may first approach us because we seem accessible, but we are never meant to be their destination. Like Philip and Andrew, our privilege is to help others encounter Christ. Through our words, compassion, hospitality, and lives, may people see beyond us to Jesus—the Savior who gave Himself for the world and still draws seeking hearts to Himself.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Open our eyes to see Jesus more clearly and faithfully lead others toward Him. Make our lives welcoming doorways through which seeking hearts may encounter Christ. May He always remain the center of our witness.

Amen.
