Bread and Fish for Five Thousand
“The disciples came to him and said, ‘Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging…’ He replied, ‘You give them something to eat.’”
Luke 9:12–13
The disciples were practical. The crowd was hungry. The day was late. The location was remote. Their solution made sense: “Send them away.” But Jesus’ response challenged their sense of what was possible: “You give them something to eat.”
They looked around—five loaves, two fish, thousands of people. It didn’t add up. But when they placed what little they had into the hands of Jesus, it became more than enough.
The World Today
Many of us feel like those disciples—overwhelmed, under-resourced, and afraid. Since the pandemic, the world has changed dramatically. Wars rage in Ukraine and the Middle East. The images of suffering, displacement, and loss weigh heavy. And not just on a global scale—our emotional and spiritual lives have taken a hit. We feel scattered, anxious, and sometimes numb.
In moments like these, it’s tempting to say, “Send them away.”
Send the pain away.
Send the problems away.
Send the responsibility away.
But Jesus still says: “You give them something.”
Stepping Out in Faith
The disciples could only offer what they had. And that was enough when surrendered to Jesus.
We may not have much either—just a few words of encouragement, a small act of kindness, a prayer of faith, a little time to listen.
But if we give it, He will bless it, break it, and multiply it.
What Might That Look Like Today?
• Offering comfort to a grieving neighbor.
• Supporting ministries helping war-torn families.
• Praying for peace when the world groans with violence.
• Being emotionally present to someone feeling lost.
It Is All Yours
Jesus invites us to offer all that we are and all that we have, even when it feels like not enough. In His hands, it is more than enough. He is still the same Jesus who feeds the hungry, binds the brokenhearted, and calls us to join Him in His work.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, we are tired. The world feels heavy, and our hearts feel small. But You still call us to give—to trust—to believe. Take what little we have and use it to feed those who are hungry for hope, healing, and peace. It is all Yours. Amen.
