Faithful in the Fire

Bible Reading: 1 Peter 4:12–19

Those who suffer according to God’s will 

should commit themselves to their faithful Creator 

and continue to do good.

When life becomes uncertain, we naturally ask God to remove the difficulty and show us what lies ahead. Peter writes instead, “Do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal” (v. 12). Suffering does not necessarily mean God has abandoned us. Oswald Chambers wisely distinguished between choosing suffering and choosing God’s will. Christians do not seek suffering; we seek God’s will, as Jesus did when He prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42). Sometimes that path leads through fire. Yet God remains our “faithful Creator.” Trials can refine our faith (1 Peter 1:6–7), expose our self-reliance, and teach us to depend upon the strength God supplies (2 Corinthians 12:9). We may not understand what God is doing, but we can trust who He is.

Peter then writes the sobering words, “It is time for judgment to begin with God’s household” (v. 17). Billy Graham reminds us never to treat sin or judgment lightly; the cross reveals both the seriousness of sin and the greatness of God’s love. Chambers similarly reminds us that God’s searching judgment can be an expression of His love, exposing what needs to be confessed and transformed. Instead of only praying, “Lord, remove this trial,” we can also pray, “Search me, God, and know my heart” (Psalm 139:23). God sometimes uses uncertain seasons to purify our motives, deepen our obedience, and make us more like Christ.

Peter’s response is wonderfully practical: entrust yourself to God and continue doing good. Earlier he tells us to speak God’s truth and serve “with the strength God provides,” so that God may be glorified in everything (v. 11). William Law saw in this a call to make our whole lives holy unto God—our work, abilities, possessions, time, relationships, and opportunities. We may not control what tomorrow brings, but we can glorify God today. His Word remains “a lamp for my feet” (Psalm 119:105). In an uncertain world, we need not see the entire road. We can entrust ourselves to our faithful Creator and take the next faithful step.

Heavenly Father, 

Search our hearts, refine our faith, and free us from self-reliance. Give us grace to seek Your will, continue doing good, and glorify You in all we do.
