A Hope That Speaks

Bible Reading:1 Peter 3:13-22

But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared 

to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason 

for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.

 1 Peter 3:15

Uncertainty has a way of making us defensive. When we are misunderstood, criticized, or treated unfairly, our natural instinct is to protect ourselves, justify our actions, or strike back. Peter knew this temptation well. On the night of Jesus’ arrest, he reached for a sword in anger, only to be gently corrected by the Lord, who healed the wounded servant. Years later, a transformed Peter writes from experience, urging believers not to respond to fear with hostility but to “be completely devoted to Christ in your hearts” (J. B. Phillips). Before we defend ourselves, we are first called to surrender ourselves.

Peter’s command to “revere Christ as Lord” literally means to sanctify Christ in our hearts. As the early church father Andreas explains, we do not make Christ any holier than He already is. Rather, as we recognize His holiness more deeply, His lordship becomes increasingly established within us. When Christ reigns in our hearts, fear gradually loses its grip. We no longer view others as enemies but as people who need the same hope we have found in Him. Eugene Peterson warns of “the danger of living on the defensive,” for fear can easily turn believers into angry people. Instead, Peter calls us to speak of our hope “with the utmost courtesy.” Our strongest witness is not a sharp argument but a gentle spirit, a clear conscience, and a life marked by Christ’s peace.

This hope rests securely in Jesus Christ, “the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God” (1 Peter 3:18). He suffered without retaliation, conquered death through His resurrection, and now reigns at God’s right hand over every authority and power. Because Christ is Lord, uncertainty need not rule our hearts. When He is enthroned within us, hope replaces fear, gentleness overcomes defensiveness, and our lives become a quiet testimony to the risen Savior. In a world searching for hope, our greatest answer is a life that reflects the Lord we have sanctified within our hearts.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, 

When uncertainty tempts us to become fearful or defensive, fill us with Your peace and gentleness. Help us to honor You in our thoughts, words, and actions, so that others may see the hope You have given us and be drawn to You.
