“The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him…”
Judges 14:6, 19; 15:14
Samson is one of the most puzzling figures in the Bible. Set apart from birth, blessed with supernatural strength, and chosen to lead Israel, he still lived a life marked by impulsiveness, anger, and broken relationships. His choices often seemed driven more by personal vengeance than by God’s will.
And yet—God used him.
Three times in Judges 14–15 we read the same phrase: “The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.” God didn’t wait for Samson to be perfect. Despite his flaws, the Lord worked through him to begin delivering Israel from the Philistines. What Samson lacked in wisdom or restraint, God made up for in sovereign power.
Samson’s life reminds us that God’s grace doesn’t require perfection. He meets us where we are, often working through our weakness rather than our strength. While Samson’s external victories were physical, they point us to the deeper spiritual truth that the Holy Spirit breaks the chains of sin, addiction, and spiritual bondage.
Like Samson, we are flawed vessels. But when God’s Spirit comes upon us, we are empowered to rise above our failures and fulfill His purposes.
Prayer:
Lord, thank You that You use people like Samson—and people like me. I bring You my weaknesses, my regrets, and my inconsistencies. Fill me with Your Spirit today. Use me, not because I am worthy, but because You are gracious and powerful.Amen
