To Whom Shall We Go?

Holding On When Others Walk Away

“Lord, to whom shall we go?

You have the Words of Eternal Life.”

John 6:68

Scripture Reading: - John 6:22-70

When Jesus told the crowd that they must eat His flesh and drink His blood to have life (John 6:53), they were offended. They had come looking for physical bread, political salvation, and earthly security. But Jesus offered something deeper—eternal life through spiritual union with Him. They asked, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered plainly: “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent” (John 6:29). But many turned away.

When others left, Jesus asked the Twelve if they would go too. Peter replied with powerful honesty: “Lord, to whom shall we go? Peter’s heartfelt declaration is that only Jesus offers truth that leads to lasting hope, transformation, and salvation. His words don’t just inform—they give life, because they flow from the heart of God Himself.

Matthew Henry writes, “The doctrine of Christ is what we must live and die by. It is the bread of life, and there is none other.” Even when difficult, Jesus’ words remain spirit and life (John 6:63).

Eugene Peterson, paraphrasing Ephesians 1:15–23 in The Message, beautifully captures what Jesus offers: “endless energy, boundless strength.” This is the same power that raised Christ from the dead and now works in us who believe.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, Your teachings are sometimes hard—but they are true. Help me hold fast to You, the only One who gives eternal life. I trust Your words, even when I don’t understand. Amen.
