A Dwelling Place for God’s Glory

“But will God really dwell on earth with humans?

The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you.

How much less this temple I have built!”

— 2 Chronicles 6:18

Solomon, at the height of his reign, displayed remarkable humility when dedicating the temple. He knelt in full view of the people and lifted his hands to heaven in reverent prayer, acknowledging Israel’s dependence on God’s mercy. Though the temple was magnificent, Solomon confessed that even the highest heavens could not contain the Lord. Solomon’s prayer was not triumphalistic but tender, interceding for his people and even for foreigners who might seek the Lord. Maclaren wrote, The true temple of God is the contrite heart… The prayer of a king bows under the sense of unworthiness.”

In response to Solomon’s prayer, fire came down from heaven, and the glory of the Lord filled the temple so powerfully that the priests could not enter. This physical manifestation of God’s presence pointed forward to a deeper spiritual reality. Under the New Covenant, God no longer dwells in buildings but in His people. Austin Farrer says, “We are not here to make a home for God. God makes a home of us.” Our bodies are now the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), called to radiate God’s holiness and love in the world.

As temples of the living God, we are to lead lives marked by humility, integrity, and reverent worship. Like Solomon, we must kneel in prayer, acknowledging our continual need for grace. F.B. Meyer reminds us, “When we yield our lives as His temple, we shall know His indwelling.” And Donald Coggan declares, “God’s glory must be seen in His people. If not in them, where shall the world behold it?” Let us live in such a way that others see the radiance of His glory in us—not through grand displays, but through quiet faithfulness, prayerful dependence, and Christlike love.

Prayer

Lord, You are greater than the heavens, yet You choose to dwell within us. Make our hearts a holy temple for Your glory. Fill us with Your Spirit, shape us by Your mercy, and let our lives reflect the beauty of Your presence. May others see You in us and be drawn to worship You.

Amen.
