From Self-Life to Christ-Life
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” — Colossians 2:6–7
Change is easy to attempt but hard to sustain—because what’s broken in us cannot be fixed by willpower alone, only by a living union with Christ. Rules, rituals, and resolutions may restrain behavior for a time, but they cannot renew the heart. As Paul wrote, “Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom… but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence” (Colossians 2:23). William Barclay observed, “The Christian life is not a code of rules to observe but a living relationship with the risen Christ.” Jesus did not come merely to improve our conduct; He came to transform our nature from within.
Union with Christ is the secret of that transformation. When we come to Him, our old self dies and His resurrection life begins to flow through us. John Stott beautifully explains, “To be in Christ is to share in His life, His righteousness, and His Spirit. This is the secret of Christian holiness.” E. Stanley Jones called it “the Christ-life replacing the self-life.” As we abide in Him, the Holy Spirit accomplishes what no law or self-discipline can—shaping our inner life to reflect His image. Like branches drawing life from the vine (John 15:4–5), our strength and fruitfulness depend entirely on remaining connected to Jesus.
When Paul prayed that Christ would “dwell in your hearts through faith” (Ephesians 3:17), he was describing more than a passing feeling—it is the deep, continual indwelling of Christ’s presence shaping who we are. As His love takes root, it stabilizes and strengthens us from the inside out. True transformation begins not by striving harder but by surrendering deeper. It is not self-effort but the Spirit’s gentle work that makes us new. When Christ truly dwells in our hearts, His love becomes the soil of our growth, His strength the source of our renewal, and His presence the proof of lasting change.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, we open our hearts for You to dwell within us by faith. Root us deeply in Your love and make us steadfast in our devotion. Transform our thoughts, desires, and actions so that Your life—not ours—flows through all we do. May Your indwelling presence bring lasting change that reflects Your glory. Amen.
