Grace to Stand Firm

Bible Reading: 1 Peter 5:1–11

The God of all grace, 

who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, 

after you have suffered a while, perfect, 

establish, strengthen, and settle you. 

1 Peter 5:10

Life often raises difficult questions. We rarely doubt that God loves us, but we sometimes wonder how He will accomplish His purposes through our trials. C. S. Lewis once wrote, “We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us; we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.” Peter understood that concern. Writing to believers facing persecution and suffering, he does not promise an easy road. Instead, he points them to “the God of all grace,” who provides exactly what His children need for every season. God’s provision is not always the removal of suffering but the gift of sustaining grace within it. Therefore Peter urges us to humble ourselves before God and to “cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). The God who calls us also carries the burdens we cannot bear ourselves.

Peter immediately follows this encouragement with a sober warning: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). C. S. Lewis wisely observed that the enemy’s greatest strategy is often to keep people unaware of his influence. Just as someone who is intoxicated may not realize it, those who are spiritually asleep seldom recognize the danger around them. Yet those who earnestly seek to follow Christ become increasingly aware of the spiritual battle and their need for God’s protection. Peter does not call believers to fear the adversary but to resist him, “steadfast in the faith” (v. 9). The God who warns us of the battle also provides the armor to stand firm (Ephesians 6:10–18) and promises that He will never leave or forsake His people (Hebrews 13:5).

Peter concludes with one of Scripture’s greatest promises: “The God of all grace… will Himself perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you” (1 Peter 5:10). Notice that it is God Himself who does the work. He restores what suffering has wounded, strengthens what has grown weak, and establishes those who trust Him. Whatever trial or spiritual battle you face today, remember that God’s grace is greater than your weakness, His care is deeper than your anxiety, and His power is stronger than your adversary. The God who calls you is the God who will faithfully sustain you until the day you stand complete in His eternal glory.

Strengthen our faith, establish our hearts, and remind us each day that Your grace is sufficient and Your care for us never fails.
