Never Give Up

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

Have you ever prayed about something for months—or even years—without seeing an answer? Perhaps it concerns someone you love, a broken relationship, an illness, or a situation that seems impossible to change. Waiting can wear us down. Jesus knew how easily discouragement can weaken our faith, so He told His disciples a story specifically to teach them to “pray and not become discouraged” (Luke 18:1).

In the story, a widow repeatedly approached an unjust judge asking for justice. The judge neither feared God nor respected people, yet eventually he responded because she kept coming. Jesus’ point isn’t that God is like the reluctant judge. It is the opposite. If even an unjust judge finally responds, how much more can we trust our loving Father? God hears the cries of His people and will ultimately bring justice (vv. 7–8). Persistent prayer isn’t about wearing God down until He gives us what we want. It is about continuing to trust Him when His answer seems delayed. “Wait for the LORD; be strong and let your heart take courage” (Psalm 27:14).

Who enters God’s kingdom? Those who receive Christ by faith and continue trusting Him even when they cannot see what He is doing. Jesus ends the parable with a searching question: “When the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?” (v. 8). The question is not simply, Will we keep praying? but Will we keep trusting? God may answer differently or later than we expect, but prayer keeps our hearts turned toward Him. Paul encourages us to be “rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer” (Romans 12:12). When answers seem far away, we can keep coming to our Father because we know His character. Persistent prayer is faith refusing to let go of God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, 

When answers seem delayed and we become discouraged, help us keep coming to You. Give us patience to wait, courage to persevere, and faith to trust Your goodness. Keep our hearts faithful in prayer until the end.
