Changed Within

Scripture Reading: Matthew 12:22–37

For the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart.

Have you ever spoken in anger and immediately wished you could take back your words? What comes out of our mouths often reveals what is hidden in our hearts. When Jesus healed a man who was blind and unable to speak, the crowd was amazed. But the Pharisees accused Him of performing the miracle through Satan’s power. They witnessed a man being set free, yet refused to acknowledge God’s work. Jesus warned them about resisting the Holy Spirit. Carlo Carretto’s urgent appeal, “Come out, while you are still able!” reminds us not to allow sin to harden our hearts until we become unwilling to repent.

Jesus then compared the human heart to a tree. A good tree bears good fruit, while a bad tree bears bad fruit. Our words and actions reveal what is growing within us. Augustine observed, “For a person must first be changed in order for his works to be changed.” We may try to control our temper, speak more kindly, or improve our behavior, but lasting transformation cannot come through outward effort alone. A polite tongue cannot cure a bitter heart. We need the Holy Spirit to renew our thoughts, attitudes, and motives. David’s prayer becomes our own: “Create in me a clean heart, God” (Psalm 51:10).

Who enters God’s kingdom? Those who receive Christ through faith and whose lives are transformed by His grace. Salvation is God’s gift, not something we earn through good works (Ephesians 2:8–10). Yet the Holy Spirit works within us, producing love, patience, kindness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23). When we recognize sin in our lives, we need not despair. Jesus promises to receive everyone who comes to Him (John 6:37). Today, instead of asking God merely to change our words or behavior, let us invite Him to change our hearts. When we are changed within, the fruit of Christ’s love becomes visible in everything we say and do.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, 

Search our hearts and forgive us for the sins we have allowed to take root. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit and renew our thoughts, attitudes, and motives. May our words and actions bear good fruit and reflect the love of Christ.
