Scattered to Serve

Scripture: Acts 8:1–8

Therefore, those who had been scattered 

went about preaching the word.

What happens when adversity disrupts our lives? Following Stephen’s martyrdom, severe persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem. Saul began ravaging the Church, dragging believers from their homes and imprisoning them. Yet persecution did not silence their witness. Instead, the scattered believers carried the gospel wherever they went, fulfilling Jesus’ promise that they would become His witnesses in Judea and Samaria (Acts 1:8). What appeared to be a devastating setback became an unexpected opportunity for God’s purposes to unfold.

Joseph Parker beautifully describes this remarkable transformation: “The seed shaken out by the wind was carried by the wind to other fields.” He observes that the believers were taught eloquence by persecution and made evangelists through suffering. Philip demonstrated this faithfulness by going to Samaria, crossing longstanding religious and cultural boundaries to proclaim Christ. Stephen’s death had not ended the mission; Philip continued the work. What others intended for destruction, God used to spread His Word. Joseph expressed this same truth when he reassured his brothers, saying, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20).

Our circumstances may change, but our calling to remain faithful does not. Disappointments, opposition, and unexpected difficulties can become opportunities to demonstrate God’s love. Paul reminds us that his imprisonment actually advanced the gospel (Philippians 1:12–14). Like Philip, we are called to remain obedient, proclaim Christ through our words and actions, and carry His healing presence wherever God places us. The chapter begins with persecution but ends with a remarkable declaration: “There was great joy in that city” (Acts 8:8). May our faithfulness amid adversity likewise become a source of hope and joy to others.

Heavenly Father, 

Strengthen our faith when adversity disrupts our plans. Give us courage to remain obedient, recognize new opportunities for service, and carry Your love wherever You lead us. May our lives bring hope, healing, and joy to others.
