A Reflection on Lamentations 3:22-23
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV)
Lamentations is a book of sorrow, written in the aftermath of Jerusalem’s fall. The people of Judah had lost everything—their city, their temple, and their sense of security. Yet, in the heart of lament, Jeremiah proclaims a truth that sustains all who trust in God: His steadfast love never ceases, His mercies never fail, and His faithfulness remains unshaken.
This passage reminds us that even in suffering, God’s love is constant. His mercy is not dependent on our circumstances but on His unchanging character. Though the Israelites were experiencing the consequences of their sin, God had not abandoned them. As Alexander Maclaren observes, Jeremiah’s hope was not in a change of situation but in the certainty of God’s love.
God’s mercies are “new every morning.” Each day, He provides fresh grace sufficient for our needs. Just as He sustained Israel with manna in the wilderness, He offers us daily provision—strength for today and hope for tomorrow. C.H. Spurgeon beautifully puts it: “No matter how dark the night, morning always comes.”
When Jeremiah declares, “Great is Your faithfulness,” he acknowledges a truth that extends beyond personal experience. God’s faithfulness is not just a past reality but a present and future certainty. Even when we falter, He remains true to His promises. John Calvin emphasizes that this phrase signifies the immensity of God’s trustworthiness—His faithfulness exceeds all measure.
How should we respond? First, we must trust in His love, knowing that it does not waver even when life is difficult. Second, we should seek His mercies daily, turning to Him for renewal and strength. Third, we must live in hope, believing that He is working all things for good. Finally, we should proclaim His faithfulness, encouraging others with the truth that sustains us.
When life feels overwhelming, let us hold tightly to this truth: God’s mercies are new every morning, and He is forever faithful. May we, like Jeremiah, lift our eyes in the midst of trials and declare, “Great is Your faithfulness!”
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unchanging love and daily mercies. When we are weak, remind us of Your steadfast faithfulness. May we trust You fully and proclaim Your goodness always. Amen.
