The Lord Alone

Creator, Sustainer, and Worthy of Worship

“You are the Lord, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.” — Nehemiah 9:6

Nehemiah 9:6 is a powerful declaration of God’s sovereignty, creative power, sustaining care, and worthiness of worship. As the Israelites gathered to confess their sins and renew their covenant, they began with this essential truth: God alone is Lord.

God, the Creator of All

The heavens, the earth, and the seas exist because of God’s creative word (Genesis 1:1). As C.S. Lewis observed, “A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.” All creation testifies to His majesty.

God, the Sustainer of Life

God not only created the world but also upholds and preserves it. Eugene Peterson wrote, “God is not a distant watchmaker who wound up the world and left it to run on its own. He is the Living God, present and active.” If He sustains the universe, how much more does He care for us?

God, the Object of Worship

Alexander Maclaren wrote, “If the very stars sing His praises, how much more should we, who bear His image?” Worship is our rightful response to God’s glory. Spurgeon warned against lukewarm praise: “We ought not to worship God in a slovenly way. It should be the heart’s delight.”

Psalm 95:6 calls us to humble, wholehearted worship before our Creator:“Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker!”It reminds us that true worship is not just words but reverence, surrender, and joy in acknowledging God as our sovereign Creator.

Prayer

Lord, You alone are God. You made the heavens and the earth, and You hold all things together. Forgive us for when we place other things before You. May our hearts be filled with awe, and may our worship be wholehearted and true. We bow before You, our Creator and Sustainer, giving You all glory and honor. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
