Lamb Among Wolves

Contested Ground, Conquering Grace

“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”Luke 10:19

Lent reminds us that the path of obedience is often the path of resistance. When Jesus sent out the seventy-two disciples, He warned them they were like lambs among wolves. Yet He didn’t send them powerless—He gave them authority. The same is true for us. The more closely we follow Christ, the more we may feel spiritual pushback—but we walk with His power.

Charles Spurgeon wrote, “We are invincible until our work is done.” This isn’t a call to recklessness but a reminder that nothing can derail God’s purpose for our lives. Jesus didn’t promise the absence of hardship. He promised that no true harm would touch those walking in His authority.

Eugene Peterson paraphrased Luke 10:19 as: “Safe passage as you walk on snakes and scorpions, and protection from every assault of the Enemy.” The threats remain, but the outcome is assured. William Barclay reminds us that we are soldiers in a spiritual war—but never unarmed or alone. Christ’s authority is our armor.

This ties into Deuteronomy 1:30, where Moses reassures the Israelites that God goes before them and fights on their behalf. The road to blessing is rarely smooth. But every step forward is already claimed by Christ. The battle is fierce—but not final.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for going before me and giving me Your authority. Help me walk boldly even when the path is hard. Remind me that resistance does not mean defeat. Strengthen my faith when I face opposition, and anchor me in Your victory. Amen.

Closing Thought

Where in your life are you facing resistance? Could that be the very ground God is calling you to reclaim in His name?
