Keeping in Step with the Spirit

“Since we live by the Spirit,

let us keep in step with the Spirit.”

Galatians 5:25

The Christian life is not about trying harder—it’s about walking with the Spirit. Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:25 that since the Spirit gave us life, we must now walk in rhythm with Him. This is not a sprint or a solo performance. It’s a daily, moment-by-moment journey of aligning our steps with God’s.

Zechariah 4:6 gives us the same truth in different words: “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit,” says the Lord. Human strength can’t produce spiritual fruit. Our efforts, our strategies, even our passion are not enough to change hearts—including our own. Only the Spirit can bring about real transformation.

To “keep in step” means to follow the Spirit’s lead. He guides us gently but clearly—through Scripture, through prayer, through conviction, and through peace. He will never rush us or lead us into fear. Instead, He leads us in love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22–23).

Are you trying to live the Christian life by your own might or power? Surrender. Let go of striving and let the Spirit guide you. Walk with Him. Stay close. Step by step.

Prayer:

Lord, I confess that too often I rely on my own strength. Teach me to walk by Your Spirit—not in striving, but in surrender. Lead me today, step by step. Amen.
