The Best Book to Read Is the Bible

From Sunday School Songs to Sacred Truth

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”

Psalm 119:105

There are many books that inform or entertain—but only one that transforms: the Bible. It is the best book to read because it is the living Word of God. In its pages, we discover truth that endures, hope that strengthens, and grace that saves. The Bible speaks with clarity across time and cultures, guiding us in the way we should go.

I remember singing a simple chorus in Sunday School:

“The best book to read is the Bible,

If you read it every day,

It will help you all the way—

The best book to read is the Bible!”

At the time, it was just a cheerful rhyme. But over the years, I’ve come to see the profound truth in those childlike words. The Bible is our daily bread, our light in darkness, our compass in confusion. It doesn’t just inform us—it forms us. As Dallas Willard wrote, “The Bible is God’s gift to help us know how things are in reality—and how we can live in light of that truth.

The Bible is the best book to read because in it, we meet the living God. We encounter the Father who lovingly created us, the Son who died and rose to redeem us, and the Holy Spirit who indwells and empowers us. Each page reveals the heart of the triune God—His holiness, mercy, and unfailing love. To read Scripture is to draw near to the One who knows us fully and loves us completely.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of the Bible. Help me to love Your Word, read it daily, and live by its truth. As I read, may I hear Your voice, see Your face, and walk more closely with You each day. Amen.
