Faith That Sees and Faith That Steps
“By faith we understand… By faith Abraham obeyed…” Hebrews 11:3, 8
Faith is the lens through which we begin to perceive reality as God sees it. Scripture tells us, “By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command” (Hebrews 11:3). Faith allows us to grasp what the mind alone cannot—that all things seen flow from the unseen hand of God. Augustine expressed it simply and profoundly: “Believe that you may understand.” We do not wait for perfect clarity before we trust; trust becomes the doorway through which clarity eventually comes. Billy Graham wrote, “Faith enables us to see the invisible, believe the incredible, and receive the impossible.” When we believe, the light begins to break in.
But faith is more than seeing—it takes the next steps. Abraham shows us faith in motion: “By faith Abraham obeyed… even though he did not know where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8). He said “yes” to God without a map, trusting the One who called him. He lived by promises he could not yet see fulfilled, building his life not on circumstances but on God’s character. This kind of faith rearranges priorities, loosens our grip on control, and moves us toward obedience that may not make sense to anyone else. Abraham walked through seasons of waiting, longing, and uncertainty, yet his anchor remained the faithfulness of God.
True faith keeps saying “yes” even when the road grows long and the outcomes unclear. It trusts that God’s wisdom is better than our understanding. As E. Stanley Jones reminds us, faith is not only us holding on to God—it is God holding on to us. Our grip may weaken, but His never does. The strength of our faith is not measured by our certainty, but by the unwavering faithfulness of the One who carries us. When we step into the unknown as Abraham did, we discover that the God who created the universe is the same God who guides our steps, surrounds us with His presence, and opens paths where none seemed possible.
Prayer:
Lord, open our eyes to see Your hand in all things. Give us courage to say “yes” to Your call and strength to trust Your promises. Help us follow wherever You lead, knowing You will never let us go. Amen.
