God’s Purpose and Trust
Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:25–34
“Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness,
and all these things will be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33
In the heart of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus speaks directly to the anxious places we carry within us. He does not deny that we have real needs—food, clothing, security—but He gently uncouples those needs from fear. Worry, Jesus teaches, does not build the future; it drains the present. God’s purpose for us is not a life of frantic control, but one of trusting attentiveness.
By pointing to birds and wildflowers, Jesus reveals a world sustained by a faithful Father. Creation is not careless, and neither are our lives. The God who clothes the lilies and feeds the birds knows our needs even before we name them. Trust grows when we begin to see that our lives are held within a larger, loving order—one shaped by the kingdom of God.
To “seek first the kingdom” is not to escape responsibility, but to reorder our loves. It means placing God’s reign, God’s justice, and God’s presence at the center of our daily decisions. When we do, anxiety loosens its grip. As we release our tight hold on what lies ahead, we discover that we ourselves are being held—by a peace that surpasses understanding, grounded in the sure love and faithful provision of the Father.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, teach us to trust You one day at a time. Free us from anxious striving, and help us seek first Your kingdom, confident that You know what we need. Amen.
