Abundant Life

 

Bible Reading: John 10:1–18

I have come that they may have life, 

and that they may have it more abundantly.”

 John 10:10 

Every day we are surrounded by voices promising fulfillment through success, wealth, or pleasure, yet they often leave us empty and searching for more. Jesus contrasts those empty promises with His own mission: “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” The thief seeks only to steal our joy, destroy our hope, and separate us from God. Jesus, however, offers a life that begins the moment we trust Him and continues into eternity. It is a life overflowing with His forgiveness, love, peace, and guidance. God’s greatest provision is not merely meeting our physical needs but giving us His Son, who alone satisfies the deepest longings of the human heart. Jesus explains that this life is found in a relationship with Him, the Good Shepherd. “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me” (John 10:14). Unlike the hired hand, who cares only for his wages and abandons the flock when danger comes, Jesus is completely devoted to His sheep. He willingly laid down His life to save them. Eugene Peterson observes that throughout John’s Gospel Jesus uses simple “I AM” images that everyone understands—Bread, Light, Gate, Shepherd, Resurrection, Way, Truth, Life, and Vine. These familiar pictures reveal an extraordinary truth: Jesus invites us into God’s own life. He becomes the Bread who nourishes us, the Light who guides us, the Gate who welcomes us, the Shepherd who protects us, the Resurrection who gives us hope, the Truth who steadies us, and the Vine who enables us to bear lasting fruit. He comes to us in humility so that we may share in His abundant life.

Today the Good Shepherd still calls His sheep by name. His greatest gift is not simply what He provides but His own presence. Because He laid down His life and took it up again, we can trust Him completely. Whatever needs or uncertainties we face, we are never alone. The Shepherd who gave everything for His flock will faithfully provide all we need according to His perfect wisdom and love (Romans 8:32). As we listen for His voice and follow His leading, we discover that the richest life is found not in what we possess, but in walking each day with the One who came that we might have life to the full.

 Lord Jesus, thank You for being our Good Shepherd. Thank You for giving Your life so that we might share in Yours. Help us to hear Your voice, follow Your leading, and rest in Your faithful care. May we find our deepest joy and fullest satisfaction in You, the greatest gift our Father has provided. Amen.
