Blessed Heart

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

When Jesus sat on the mountainside and began to teach, He described a kind of happiness very different from what the world promises. We often associate the blessed life with comfort, success, recognition, or getting what we want. But Jesus called the poor in spirit, the meek, the merciful, the peacemakers, and even those who suffer for righteousness “blessed” (Matthew 5:3–10). Eugene Peterson observes that Jesus is training His disciples to live not in reaction to fear, guilt, cynicism, or self-interest, but in response to the realities of God’s kingdom. God desires our deepest good, and true happiness is discovered when our lives come under His gracious rule.

At the heart of the Beatitudes is Jesus’ remarkable promise: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God” (v. 8). Purity begins within—in our thoughts, motives, desires, and affections. David prayed, “Create in me a pure heart, O God” (Psalm 51:10). As the Spirit cleanses our hearts from divided loyalties, our spiritual vision becomes clearer. We begin to recognize God’s truth in Scripture, His love in Christ, His faithfulness in difficulty, and His presence in everyday life. Moses expressed the longing of a heart centered upon God when he prayed, “Now show me your glory” (Exodus 33:18). C. S. Lewis insightfully observed that the pure in heart are promised the sight of God because they are the ones who truly desire Him. Discipleship gradually changes our prayer from merely asking, What can God give us? to saying, Lord, above all Your gifts, we want You.

This promise also points forward. John writes, “We shall see him as he is,” adding that everyone who has this hope “purifies themselves” (1 John 3:2–3). The hope of seeing Christ someday changes how we follow Him today. We cannot create pure hearts through determination alone; we need the transforming work of the Holy Spirit. May His power grant us wisdom to recognize what clouds our vision, courage to surrender our divided loyalties, and strength to follow Jesus faithfully. The truly blessed life is the life that longs for God, seeks His face, and lives in the hope of one day seeing Him.

Heavenly Father, 

Create in us pure and undivided hearts. By Your Spirit, grant us wisdom, courage, and strength to follow Jesus faithfully. Above all Your gifts, teach us to desire You and seek Your face.
