Christ’s Mindset

Bible Reading: Philippians 2:1–8

In your relationships with one another, 

have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.

Philippians 2:5

What does it truly mean to follow Jesus? Paul gives us a clear picture: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves” (Philippians 2:3). True discipleship is more than believing the right things about Christ; it is allowing His Spirit to reshape our attitudes, ambitions, relationships, and the way we treat others. Eugene Peterson draws attention to the Greek word kenosis - “self-emptying” or “pouring out.” Though Jesus possessed every right and privilege, He did not cling to them for His own advantage. Instead, “he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (v. 7). He poured Himself out in loving obedience, becoming “obedient to death—even death on a cross” (v. 8). As Jesus said, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve” (Matthew 20:28).

Dallas Willard reminds us that having the mind of Christ also frees us from needing position, power, recognition, or success to establish our worth. Jesus knew who He was and where He had come from, yet He knelt and washed His disciples’ feet (John 13:3–5). His security in the Father freed Him to stoop and serve. When our identity is secure in Christ, we no longer need to grasp for recognition, protect our position, or insist on having our own way. Instead, we become free to ask, “Whom can I serve today?” Jesus’ call remains clear: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24). Perhaps what we need to pour out today is our pride, our desire to be noticed, our need to be right, or our attachment to comfort and control.

Yet we cannot live this self-emptying life through determination alone. Paul reminds us that “it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (Philippians 2:13). The same Spirit who formed the character of Christ within His followers continues His work in us. As we surrender ourselves to Him, He gives us wisdom to discern His way, courage to answer His call, and strength to serve when obedience is costly. True discipleship is a life increasingly shaped by the mind of Christ—not grasping but giving, not seeking to be served but serving, not living for ourselves but pouring ourselves out in love. 

Prayer 

Heavenly Father, 

Give us the mind of Christ and hearts willing to serve. By the power of Your Spirit, grant us wisdom, courage, and strength to follow Jesus humbly and pour out our lives in love for others.
