Eagles’ Wings

Bible Reading: Exodus 19:1–9

 You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, 

and how I carried you on eagles’ wings 

and brought you to myself.

 Exodus 19:4

Three months after leaving Egypt, Israel arrived at Mount Sinai. Before giving them His commands, God reminded them of His gracious deliverance—how He had rescued them from Egypt, carried them through the wilderness, and brought them into fellowship with Himself (Exodus 19:4). The ultimate purpose of their deliverance was not simply freedom from Pharaoh but a relationship with God. The Red Sea came before the giving of the Ten Commandments. God rescued His people first and then called them to obedience (Exodus 20:2). This is the pattern of grace throughout Scripture. Obedience is not a means of earning God’s love but our grateful response to the love and salvation He has already given us. God acts first; we respond in faith, gratitude, and obedience (1 John 4:19).

But Israel was rescued for more than its own blessing. God said, “You will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (Exodus 19:6). Eugene Peterson describes a priest as someone who makes the connection between God and people visible — bringing people before God and bringing the reality of God before people. Peter gives followers of Jesus this same identity: “You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9). This means ordinary disciples like us have a priestly calling. We bring a struggling friend before God in prayer, share God’s promises with someone discouraged, offer forgiveness where bitterness could grow, and make Christ’s compassion visible through quiet acts of service. We are carried by grace not merely to become recipients of God’s goodness, but representatives of His presence.

Israel responded, “We will do everything the LORD has said” (Exodus 19:8). Yet their later failures remind us that good intentions alone cannot sustain obedience. We too easily forget the God who rescued us and become distracted from the God who is with us. That is why God promises, “I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees” (Ezekiel 36:27). True discipleship means being carried by grace, brought to God, shaped by obedience, and sent to make Him known. May the power of His Spirit grant us wisdom to hear His voice, courage to obey His calling, and strength to represent Christ faithfully. Today we might ask: Where can I make the reality of God visible to someone?

Heavenly Father, 

Thank You for carrying us by Your grace and bringing us to Yourself. By Your Spirit, give us wisdom, courage, and strength to obey You and make Your love and presence known to others.
