Faith That Amazes

Bible Reading: Matthew 8:5–13

When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, ‘Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

The Roman centurion who approached Jesus could have allowed many barriers to keep him away—pride, position, race, culture, doubt, or self-sufficiency. As a military officer, he was accustomed to giving commands and being obeyed. Yet when his servant became seriously ill, he recognized a need beyond his own ability to solve. Luke tells us that this Gentile officer cared deeply for the Jewish community (Luke 7:2–5). When Jesus offered to come and heal his servant, the centurion humbly replied that he wasn’t worthy to receive Jesus under his roof. He simply asked Him to speak the word. He understood authority and believed that sickness itself was subject to Christ. Neither distance nor circumstances could limit Jesus’ power.

Remarkably, this faith amazed Jesus. Michael Card suggests that the servant’s healing isn’t the greatest miracle in the story. The “miracle behind the miracle” is the extraordinary faith of this Roman soldier. An outsider recognized in Jesus an authority greater than Rome’s and trusted Him without requiring visible proof. Billy Graham reminds us that God values such trust. Jesus pointed His disciples to the birds, which are faithfully cared for by their heavenly Father, and reminded them that they are even more precious to God (Matthew 6:26). Faith isn’t confidence that God will always give us exactly what we request. It is confidence in God Himself—His power, wisdom, goodness, and care. That trust grows as we spend time in His presence, pray, worship, read His Word, and step forward in obedience. Through experience, we discover again and again that God can be trusted.

Jesus then revealed that God’s grace reaches far beyond the boundaries people create. Many would come from east and west to share in God’s kingdom (Matthew 8:11), fulfilling Isaiah’s vision of a banquet prepared “for all peoples” (Isaiah 25:6). Here we glimpse the mystery of God’s gifts: grace crosses boundaries, faith sometimes appears where least expected, and Christ’s authority reaches places we cannot. Jesus simply spoke, and the servant was healed (Matthew 8:13). We too can bring every need to Him. We may not know how He will answer, but we know the One who hears us. Our greatest gift may not always be the answer we seek, but a deeper faith that learns to trust Him.
