Rock Solid

Bible Reading: Matthew 7:21–28

Everyone who hears these words of mine 

and puts them into practice is like a wise man 

who built his house on the rock.

As Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount, He gives us a searching picture of true discipleship. It is possible to hear His words, even call Him “Lord,” yet fail to build our lives upon what He says (Matthew 7:21). Eugene Peterson draws attention to the Greek word poieō in verse 24, translated “puts into practice.” It means “to do” or “to make” and is related to the word from which we get poet. Peterson pictures Jesus inviting us to make something of His words—to build a beautiful life out of them. “Love your enemies” becomes forgiveness (Matthew 5:44). “Seek first his kingdom” becomes reordered priorities (6:33). “Do to others what you would have them do to you” becomes practical kindness (7:12). One word at a time, one act of obedience at a time, the teaching of Jesus takes visible form in our lives.

Jesus describes two builders who have much in common. Both hear His teaching, both build, and both encounter storms (Matthew 7:24–27). The difference is hidden beneath the surface: one hears and obeys; the other hears but does nothing. James echoes this warning: “Do not merely listen to the word… Do what it says” (James 1:22). The foundation is formed quietly before the storm arrives. Every time we forgive rather than retaliate, tell the truth rather than compromise, pray rather than panic, or obey when nobody is watching, our lives are being anchored more firmly to Christ. Storms do not create the foundation; they reveal it.

Perhaps the greatest danger is not deliberately rejecting Christ but simply failing to think about what we are building upon. Careers, possessions, accomplishments, and routines can occupy our attention while our spiritual foundation remains neglected. Jesus therefore leaves us with a clear call: Hear My words, put them into practice, and build your life upon Me. “No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11). We cannot build such a life through determination alone. May the power of His Spirit grant us wisdom to understand Christ’s words, courage to obey them when obedience is costly, and strength to remain faithful when storms come. One act of obedience at a time, may the words of Jesus become a beautiful life.

Heavenly Father, 

Help us hear and obey the words of Jesus. By Your Spirit, give us wisdom, courage, and strength to build our lives firmly upon Christ and remain faithful through every storm.
