Scripture: Numbers 27:12–23
So the LORD said to Moses, ‘Take Joshua the son of Nun,
a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him.
Numbers 27:18
Moses had faithfully led Israel for many years, but now God told him that his season of leadership was nearing its end. Moses would see the Promised Land, but another would lead Israel into it. Remarkably, Moses’ first concern was not for himself but for God’s people. He prayed that God would appoint someone to lead them so that they would not be “like sheep without a shepherd” (vv. 16–17). Joseph Parker calls this “a shepherdly prayer, an unselfish desire.” Moses understood that Israel belonged to God, and therefore the choice of the next leader also belonged to Him.
God answered Moses’ prayer by choosing Joshua, “a man in whom is the Spirit.” Joshua’s calling did not rest merely upon ability, experience, or ambition. God had been preparing him, and His Spirit was within him. Moses was told to lay his hand upon Joshua and publicly commission him before Eleazar and the congregation. There is something deeply moving about Moses willingly strengthening the person who would continue the work he had begun. Faithfulness sometimes means accepting responsibility; at other times, it means releasing responsibility and preparing another person to carry it forward. Paul later expressed the same principle when he told Timothy to entrust what he had learned “to faithful people who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2).
Being faithful and obedient means recognizing that God’s work is greater than any one servant. We serve wholeheartedly during the season He gives us, encourage those who follow us, and trust Him with what comes next. Moses’ leadership ended, but God’s purposes continued through Joshua. Ultimately, every human shepherd points us toward Jesus, who declared, “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11). Leaders and seasons change, but God continues His work through Spirit-filled servants who faithfully answer His call.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Fill us with Your Spirit and make us faithful in the work You entrust to us. Give us humility to encourage those who follow us and grace to release our responsibilities when the time comes. May we faithfully and obediently serve Your purposes in every season of our lives.
Amen.
