Scripture: Luke 12:41–48
The Lord answered, ‘Who then is
the faithful and wise manager,
whom the master puts in charge?
Luke 12:42
Peter asks Jesus whether His teaching about watchfulness is meant for the disciples or for everyone. Jesus answers with another question: “Who then is the faithful and wise manager?” Michael Card suggests that Jesus may have Peter particularly in mind. Peter would one day be entrusted with caring for Christ’s people, hearing the risen Jesus say, “Feed My lambs… Tend My sheep” (John 21:15–16). The faithful manager understands that everything placed in his care belongs ultimately to the Master. Paul expresses the same truth: “It is required of stewards that one be found trustworthy” (1 Corinthians 4:2).
J. C. Ryle emphasizes that Jesus calls blessed the servant whom the master finds doing his work (Luke 12:43). Faithfulness is more than good intentions, promises, or professions; it becomes visible in loving service. Michael Card adds that stewardship involves not only what God entrusts to us, but whom God entrusts to us. Our families, friends, churches, colleagues, and others placed in our care are sacred trusts. Jesus warns about the servant who forgets his master and begins mistreating those entrusted to him. Christian responsibility is therefore never about privilege or power, but about serving others as Christ served us (Mark 10:45).
Jesus concludes, “From everyone who has been given much, much will be required” (Luke 12:48). Following Jesus is not simply beginning the journey enthusiastically; it means remaining faithful throughout our lives. Our time, abilities, knowledge, opportunities, and relationships have all been entrusted to us for God’s purposes. To be faithful and obedient is to use what God has given us and lovingly care for those He has placed around us. May our Master find us faithfully serving when He comes.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for all that You have entrusted to us, especially the people You have placed in our lives. Give us wisdom to care for them, humility to serve them, and faithfulness to continue doing Your will. May we remain faithful and obedient servants throughout our lives.
Amen.
